Baby boomers choosing divorce for various reasons

The dissolution of a marriage in Massachusetts can understandably be hard to navigate both financially and emotionally. This is the case no matter how long or short of a time two people have been united in marriage. However, divorce is becoming more common among older individuals. Here is a glimpse at the reason behind this phenomenon.

A common perception is that baby boomers decide to get divorced because they no longer feel fulfilled in their marriages. However, this is not always the case. In a recent interview, some women and men acknowledged that their growing apart sparked their marital breakups, but others claimed that violations of their binding responsibilities were the culprit.

For instance, some women and men asserted that infidelity ruined their relationships. Mental health issues in a partner have also been blamed for divorces among both women and men. However, more men than women appear to attribute their divorces to money-management issues -- for example, a spouse's excessive spending on credit cards in an effort to keep up with the Joneses.

Not all marriages in Massachusetts work out no matter how hard spouses may try to make them work. However, if they can see eye to eye on matters such as the division of property, they may be able to reach a divorce settlement through a process such as mediation or informal negotiations, thus avoiding further court intrusion. Otherwise, they have no choice but to go to trial, where a judge will ultimately determine how property distribution and other divorce matters will be handled. An attorney can help a client in either situation to pursue the most personally favorable outcome possible given the circumstances of the divorce proceeding.
