Finances and child custody among important divorce decisions

The process of dissolving a marriage in Massachusetts can be harrowing both emotionally and financially. In the midst of one's emotions, overlooking critical details can be easy. A couple of tips may help those going through the divorce process to cover their bases when it comes to finances and child custody.

First, putting together a detailed post-divorce budget as soon as possible is critical. A divorcing spouse may benefit from creating several budgets that reflect a range of scenarios. For example, perhaps one budget might show how expenses will be met if child support payments are received. Meanwhile, another budget might include alimony payments as part of the monthly income amount. Having a clear budget may help a divorcing spouse to better prepare for what the future holds financially.

Second, keeping conflict between the spouses away from the children is paramount. Not exposing the children to this conflict will assist them in better adjusting to life after divorce. In turn, they may feel less stress and turmoil.

Divorce is never an easy process in Massachusetts, especially when children are involved. However, if two spouses can work out their differences through information negotiation or through mediation -- both of which are alternatives to traditional divorce -- they may avoid further court intrusion. They can decide on matters such as property division as well as create a parenting agreement that satisfies both sides. When it comes to the children, however, making decisions that prioritize the best interests of the children is important.
