Facts about divorce that can be helpful to know

Getting divorced is a life-changing event for the entire family, and unfortunately, it is rarely an easy process. This is true even for couples in Massachusetts who have not been married long or who have not accumulated many assets during their marriage. A couple of things are particularly valuable to know about getting a divorce.

The separation often happens following a holiday season or vacation. Thus, some couples who are contemplating divorce may very well make this year's summer vacation their last one as a family. Part of the reason for this is that couples may use vacations to really find out what their relationships are made of and how they feel about their spouses. When they realize they are unhappy, they finally make the move to get divorced.

Another important fact about divorce is that the younger two people get married, the greater the likelihood of their getting divorced. In fact, research shows that nearly 60 percent of the women who get married before turning 18 will end up getting divorced within a 15-year timespan. However, this rate of divorce decreases to 36 percent for couples who get married after they have turned 20. In addition, while half of first marriages end in divorce, the figure is 67 percent for second marriages and a whopping 73 percent for third marriages.

Although divorce can be challenging, if the two spouses who are getting divorced in Massachusetts are able to find common ground, this can make the breakup easier to handle. They can work together to reach a divorce settlement that satisfies both parties without further court intrusion. However, if achieving a settlement is not possible, they will have to rely on a judge to resolve their divorce issues for them.
