The ramifications of a relationship can last for years — particularly when children are involved. This is true even if a couple never gets married. This can be true when issues of child support are in question — and when large amounts of money are at stake.
In most cases, it’s the father who is likely responsible for paying child support. However, in some circumstances, it might be up to the mother to do so if her income is considerably larger. This is what’s happening with Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry and her former boyfriend.
Berry and Gabriel Aubry have a 6-year-old daughter together. The couple split up, however, in 2010; since then, Berry has remarried and had a son with her new husband. Berry and Aubry worked out their custody issues in 2011, agreeing to share equal custody of their daughter. The issues over child support, however, have gone unresolved until now.
A court in California ordered Berry to pay $16,000 per month in child support payments to Aubry. She also must hand over $115,000 in retroactive child support. The court also said that Berry will be responsible for the girl’s school tuition, while Aubry will pay for some of her health care costs. The child support arrangement will last until the girl turns 19 or she graduates from high school, whichever comes first.
Not all child support battles last this long, but there are many reasons why it might make sense to consult an attorney to make sure that one’s interests in the case are properly represented.
